Who or what comes to your mind when you hear the word curiosity?
Children asking questions, pets getting themselves into trouble and the inbuilt neighbourhood watch that is your nosey neighbours?
It may, in part, depend on your background and language.
In the German language, for example, the literal translation Neugierde can have a negative connotation: nosiness, idle gossip.
True curiosity, on the other hand, is Wissensdurst: a thirst for knowledge, motivated by a genuine desire to understand and learn. It challenges assumptions and seeks for meaning. A healthy curiosity is not reckless either, it is an exploration that fuels creativity, learning and growth and benefits ourselves and others.
In a time where we’re at risk of outsourcing thinking for ourselves to machines, it will become ever more important to stay curious and ask the right questions.
