A Mind That is Stretched By an Idea
(if not fried by current heat wave)
Hello!
You are reading my very first newsletter sent from Substack. Or ever. Since I’m currently disenchanted with social media but still a big fan of documenting life (see below) and sharing thoughts and ideas with like-minded people, this is a great way to do exactly that. I’m hoping it will also help keep in touch with friends and colleagues all over the world.
This issue: A quote from the 1800s, revisiting an American photographer, thoughts on keeping a diary (for creatives). I hope you’ll enjoy.
Where I am right now:
As I write this, I am in my parents’ beautiful garden in Germany, hidden away from the world. It’s lush and peaceful and great for productivity. I say peaceful… in case anyone else is fighting a wasp invasion I have one word for you: garlic. They hate it.
I left my home of almost four years, Siargao Island, at the end of last year and have since been checking out Portugal as a potential new home.
This will be my 5th country to live in long-term which brings me to:
A quote from 1858
I was looking for this one particular quote and fell into a rabbit hole reading about two men I had never heard before, a father and his son, and who are long dead:
“Every now and then a man's mind is stretched by a new idea or sensation, and never shrinks back to its former dimensions.”
-- Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
